A room you know well
A writing activity
Think of a room you are very familiar with: a bedroom or family room perhaps, a room that you can easily see in your mind’s eye.
What words come to mind when you think of this room?
Quickly write down a list of words that describe the materials, furniture, colours, objects, pictures and light in the room, for example.
Then write words that describe feelings that you have when you walk into that room. Perhaps events and experiences you’ve had in this special room will come to mind.
How difficult is it to remember the details of a room which should be so familiar? Surprisingly difficult? Easy? Write freely – let ideas and associations flow. This list may even turn out to be a poem.
You may keep this “list-poem” private, or you may want to share your lists, or poems, with the rest of the class.
